Over the past six months, 30,000 new household food and garden organics collection services have been introduced by Benalla, Indigo, Wodonga and Wangaratta councils.

Waste professionals from around the state, including the Parliamentary Secretary for the Environment, Anthony Carbines MP, converged on Benalla for the North East Three Bin Conference on 16 November 2015. The conference was coordinated by North East Waste and Resource Recovery Group in conjunction with local councils and alpine resorts throughout the region to share their experiences in rolling out new kerbside food and garden organics collection systems.

The day gave attendees an opportunity to learn about how councils can introduce a third household bin for the collection of food and garden organics. Examining key learnings, procurement solutions, education strategies, what not to do, overcoming difficulties, on site processing solutions and more.

Brooke Hermans, Executive Officer North East WRGG said “It is important that we capture what has been learnt from rolling out these systems and share it across the state, so we can continue to increase the amount of organics diverted from landfill.”
