2017 North East WRRG – Local Government Waste Forum Tour

On the 30th and 31st March 2017, 25 Local Government representatives attended the North East Waste and Resource Recovery Group’s annual waste and resource recovery tour. Nine out of the ten Councils and Alpine Resorts in the North East were represented. Attendees included: NEWRRG staff, NEWRRG Board Directors, Forum representatives, Councillors and waste officers. A total of nine sites were visited over the two days. The tour was based locally in the North East region.
The group visited a variety of sites including:

Feedback from the tour demonstrated it was an overwhelming success, with a great mix of sites that catered for the diversity of attendees.  Attendees indicated they would be interested in attending another tour and are keen to see new and innovative businesses and industries in the future.  Other local facilities were recommended for future tours, including: the West Wodonga water treatment plant and other regional contract providers such as SIMS E-waste and WM waste management mattress reprocessor.

Definite highlights for attendees included the family owned businesses Jackson Earthmoving and Concrete Recycling and NutriSoil. One attendee stated that they: “would love to bottle their zest to reduce, reuse and recycle”. The visit to the Beechworth Correctional Facility to view their timber pallet recycling program made many think how they can further develop working relationships with similar institutions as well as alternative uses for these products. The visit to Wooragee Primary School highlighted the importance of taking a holistic teaching approach to sustainability from an early age, which was evident in the passion and enthusiasm of the students. All attendees stated that they came away with thoughts of how they (and their organisations) could improve or investigate better waste and resource recovery practices.

Based on the success of this year’s tour it is likely that NEWRRG will organise on behalf of their local government representatives another tour for the 17/18 financial year.  The tour will be organised in consultation with the North East representatives.
