Executive Officer News

Welcome to 2018 and the first edition of our newsletter for this year. We have seen a very busy start to the year with some key items happening within our industry.

Recycling Industry
The waste and resource recovery sector has certainly been active in the last few months, particularly in relation to the impacts of China’s National Sword Policy and acceptance of materials under their importation standards. While in the short term we will continue to work with our stakeholders to ensure that they are kept well informed and provided with the tools they need to adjust to the shift in collection and processing of recyclables, we recognise that our medium to long term planning needs to consider education, contract models, ongoing contingency planning and ongoing infrastructure investment.

E-waste ban to landfill
On 26 March, Local Government and Alpine Resorts from the North East and Goulburn Valley Waste and Resource Recovery Groups attended an engagement session lead by Sustainability Victoria concerning the preparedness for the introduction of the e-waste ban to landfill in July 2018. The session provided an overview of the e-waste infrastructure network assessment conducted in the region. The session also included working through issues and barriers and capturing feedback for implementation of recommended infrastructure solutions. North East WRRG will continue to work with its Councils and Alpine Resorts in planning for a sustainable e- waste collection network across the north east.

Further information about the e-waste ban can be read in the article within the newsletter.

On a personal note I am looking forward to re-familiarising myself with the North East region. While growing up in Wangaratta, I have lived in western Victoria for the last 19 years where I have worked for the former South West Regional Waste and Resource Recovery Group and the Barwon South West Waste and Resource Recovery Group established in 2014. In addition to holding an Executive Officer position for the former organisation I have worked closely with Local Government and other stakeholders in delivering a range of projects around improving waste management and resource recovery, through infrastructure, strategic plans and education programs. Over the next few months, I am looking forward to getting out and meeting our stakeholders and having discussions around waste and resource recovery opportunities for the north east.
