Bigger Bins for a Better Recycling Trial Concluded

In 2013 North East Regional Waste Management Group (NevRwaste) conducted a four month trial of bigger recycling bins funded by Sustainability Victoria and the Australian Packaging Covenant. The trial was held in Benalla and Wangaratta and the objectives were:

  • To determine whether the spill over of recyclables into the refuse stream can be reduced by providing additional recycling space to householders,
  • To survey the perception towards the use, handling and storing of bigger bins; and
  • To establish a business case for the viability of a regional rollout.

RESULTS

Bin weights were taken before and after the distribution of the bigger recycling bin and the weights increased by 13.8% in Benalla and 7.8% in Wangaratta. The survey showed that people generally liked the bigger recycling bins with the exeption of older or single households. Older people found the bins to cumbersome to handle. A triple bottom-line analysis was done and best results are expected for a universal rollout with opt-out option followed by a opt-in solution promoted by council.
