Executive Officer News

The end of the year provides an opportunity to reflect on key achievements of the North East Waste and Resource Recovery Group during 2016.  Updates on these achievements have been included in previous newsletters during the year.  I am pleased to report that the following major projects are now completed and take this opportunity to thank the councils and alpine resorts in the region for their support in delivering these projects in partnership with the group.

  • The Draft North East Waste and Resource Recovery Implementation Plan was approved by the board to be submitted to the Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change on 5 December 2016.
  • The coordination of a public place recycling project resulted in 50 new PPR stations & 45 bin stands installed throughout the region.
  • Coordination of an illegal dumping campaign.
  • Assisting councils and alpine resorts to undertake collaborative procurement of waste and recycling services to improve opportunities and reduce costs.
  • Coordinating the 30 Schools Environment day and celebrating the 5,000th student and 200th school in the north east region to have participated in a Schools Environment Day event.

During the year we also welcomed Cr. Ron Janas as a Director to the board and have commenced the process through our Local Government Waste Forum to seek nominations for appointment to the board of directors.

Our board directors and staff have continued to work closely with state agencies and key stakeholders, to provide regional context relevant to the north east region on matters relating to waste and resource recovery services, infrastructure and management.

We look forward to continuing to work with our key stakeholders, councils and alpine resorts during 2017.

I wish you all a happy and safe festive season.
