Don Chambers awarded OAM

Don Chambers recognised posthumously for outstanding service to the waste and resource recovery sector

The former Chair of the North Waste and Resource Recovery Group (NEWRRG) Mr. Don Chambers has been awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia posthumously in the 2017 Australia Day Honours List for services to local government and the Victorian community.

Don played a key role in the local community for over 40 years and had been a Board Member of North East Victoria Regional Waste Management Group (NevRwaste) and was Chairperson of the newly established North East Waste Resource Recovery Group (NEWRRG), collectively serving nearly 20 years on these Boards.

Don’s commitment to the environment saw him hold the position of both State and National Chair with Keep Australian Beautiful.  He also served as a delegate on the Victorian Litter Action Alliance, was a member of the Rutherglen Land Care Group and served as a Board member with Sustainability Victoria.

NEWRRG’s Deputy Chair Anthony Griffiths who worked with Don as a Board member said “Don had a strong passion for the environment and played an instrumental role in both the establishment of NEWRRG and developing programs which focused on increasing the recovery of recyclable materials in order to reduce these materials going to landfill”.

Don played a pivotal role in brokering regional partnerships; in 2013 he secured over $200,000 worth of industry funding for the North East Victorian Waste Management Group to deliver a public place recycling project which enabled the region to fulfill one of Don’s most passionate causes: “to keep Victoria and the North East beautiful”.
