Victorian Container Deposit Scheme consultation

The Victorian Government is introducing a container deposit scheme (CDS) to increase beverage container recycling and reduce litter in Victoria.

A container deposit scheme works by applying a small deposit to beverages sold to consumers which covers the cost of recycling. When the empty beverage containers – such as those in plastic, glass bottles and aluminium cans, are returned to a refund collection point, a cash refund can be collected for each container returned.

The discussion paper sets out the Victorian Government’s proposed model for Victoria’s new container deposit scheme. The objectives of the proposed model are that is convenient to use, maximises recycling of beverage containers, is cost-effective, significantly reduces litter and provides opportunities for the participation of community groups.

Consultation on this proposal will commence today and conclude on 30 November 2020.
